The vehicle

Willys-Overland was nearly bankrupt when the Army contract came through. The company had one real asset — the Go Devil engine, which made 60 horsepower against the 45 or so of its rivals — and it won the contract largely on that.

The Jeep went on to be built in greater numbers than any other Allied vehicle of the war, and Willys spent the following decades in court trying to trademark the name it had never actually invented.
