The aircraft that started all of it, in hand-formed metal at desk scale.

Handcrafted with the Flyer's defining features: biplane wings, twin pusher propellers, forward canard elevator, rear rudder and skid undercarriage — no wheels, because it launched from a rail.

The aircraft

Orville and Wilbur ran a bicycle shop, which turned out to be exactly the right background. Bicycles taught them that an unstable machine a rider actively controls beats a stable one that steers itself — and that was the insight everyone else was missing.

They also built their own wind tunnel, having discovered that the published lift tables everyone relied on were simply wrong, and tested around two hundred wing shapes in it. The engine was cast by their shop mechanic Charlie Taylor in six weeks, because no manufacturer would build one light enough.
