The machines

Dispatch riders were the internet of a 1940s army. Radio was unreliable, could be jammed and could be intercepted, so orders that genuinely mattered went by motorcycle — one rider, one satchel, across roads that were often being shelled.

The machines were deliberately simple: side-valve engines making modest power, rigid frames, and the ability to be repaired at the roadside with basic tools. Speed was worth less than the certainty of arriving.
