Route 66
US 66 ran 2,448 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica and was one of the first fully paved transcontinental highways in America. It carried the Dust Bowl migration west in the 1930s — Steinbeck called it the mother road — and then carried the post-war holiday traffic that built the motels, diners and filling stations along it.
The interstate system bypassed it town by town, and Route 66 was formally decertified in 1985. The shields and pump livery survived as shorthand for the whole era.
