The vehicle

The M42 was the command version of the Dodge M37 three-quarter-ton truck, built on the same chassis with an enclosed body fitted out for radios, map boards and the staff who used them.

Command vehicles are an under-appreciated piece of military engineering. An army moves at the speed its headquarters can relocate, and a unit whose commander cannot talk to anyone is not a unit. The M37 family served the U.S. Army from 1951 well into the 1960s and remained in allied service far longer.
