Why tripods

The three-legged stand comes from surveying and photography, where it solved a specific problem: three points always sit flat, on any surface, without adjustment. Four legs wobble on an uneven floor; three cannot.

Studio and marine lighting adopted the form for the same reason — a searchlight on a moving deck needs to stay where it is pointed. The look has outlived the requirement, which is usually how good design ends up as decoration.
