A period Checker cab in hand-formed iron — the shape that meant "taxi" in American cities for half a century.

Handcrafted with rolling metal wheels and hand-painted in taxi livery, with roof sign, running boards and the upright, high-roofed body that let passengers keep their hats on.

The vehicle

Checker built cabs and almost nothing else, which is why they looked the way they did: no styling changes to chase, no private buyers to impress, and every design decision made for a vehicle expected to run 24 hours a day for years.

The tall roof was deliberate — men wore hats, and a cab a passenger had to stoop into lost fares. Checker kept building to that logic long after the rest of Detroit had gone low and wide, and the company survived until 1982.
