The car

The Model J arrived in 1928 with 265 horsepower at a time when a good American car made 70. Duesenberg sold only the chassis and engine — around $8,500, roughly a house — and buyers commissioned their own coachwork from Murphy, Bohman & Schwartz or Rollston. No two were identical.

Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and the Duke of Windsor owned them. Fewer than 500 were built before the Depression finished the company, and survivors now change hands for millions.
