A late-thirties American sedan in black iron — the moment when cars stopped being boxes with wheels and started being shaped.

Handcrafted with rolling metal wheels and hand-painted finish, carrying the P4's rounded nose, waterfall grille, integrated headlamps and the sloping tail that marked the shift to streamlined styling.

The car

Plymouth was Chrysler's low-price marque, launched in 1928 to fight Ford and Chevrolet, and by 1937 it was outselling both in some months. The P4 Deluxe was the better-trimmed of two model lines that year.

1937 was also the year Chrysler put safety features into ordinary cars — recessed dashboard controls, padded seat backs, curved door handles that would not catch clothing. Almost nobody advertised safety at the time because the industry assumed it reminded buyers of crashes.
