Why these look the way they do

The tow truck was invented in Chattanooga in 1916 by Ernest Holmes, who bolted a crane and pulley rig to a Cadillac chassis after spending eight hours dragging a friend's car out of a creek. By the 1920s every filling station of any size ran one, usually in the colours of whichever oil company supplied its pumps.
