The machine
Triumph built typewriters at Nuremberg from 1909, and German machines of this period are noticeably different from American ones — heavier castings, tighter tolerances, and a distinctly firmer action under the fingers.
A German keyboard is also laid out QWERTZ rather than QWERTY. The Z and Y are swapped because Z is far more common in German than in English, and the umlauts occupy the keys to the right of the letters they modify.
Writers who still use manual typewriters mostly do it for one reason: the machine cannot do anything except type. There is nowhere to click away to.
