The aircraft
Curtiss built nearly 14,000 P-40s and they flew for a dozen air forces — American, British, Soviet, Australian, Chinese, South African. It fought in North Africa, the Pacific, Russia, Burma and Italy, usually against something faster.
Pilots who flew it were divided on the aircraft and united on one thing: it took punishment. The construction was heavy and conventional, the fuel tanks were protected, and it brought people home from fights it had no business surviving.
