The engine

Harley has built V-twins since 1909, and the reason the layout stuck is partly acoustic. A 45-degree V-twin with both connecting rods sharing a single crankpin fires unevenly — one cylinder, then the other close behind, then a longer gap. That irregular interval is the sound.

The company tried to trademark it in 1994. Nine rival manufacturers objected, the case dragged on for six years, and Harley eventually withdrew the application. The sound remains unregistered and instantly recognisable.
