What it is

An armillary sphere models the sky as seen from Earth. The rings represent the celestial equator, the ecliptic along which the sun appears to move, the tropics, and the meridian — all mounted on an axis tilted to match the Earth's own 23.4 degrees.

They were working instruments for two thousand years. Chinese and Greek astronomers used them to measure the positions of stars; Renaissance navigators used them to teach the geometry that made ocean crossing possible. Tycho Brahe built enormous ones and took measurements accurate enough for Kepler to derive planetary orbits from them.

The wooden stand is the traditional library form — sphere at eye level when seated.
