The subject

The horse is the most sculpted animal in history, and the hardest. A standing horse balances an enormous body on four narrow legs, and every serious sculptor from Phidias onward has had to solve the structural problem of keeping it up without visible props.

Leonardo spent seventeen years on a bronze horse for the Duke of Milan and never cast it — the seventy tons of bronze reserved for it were requisitioned to make cannon when the French invaded, and the full-size clay model was used for target practice by French archers.
