Why the base matters

A base does two things. Practically, it spreads the load and stops a four-legged sculpture from rocking on a surface that is not perfectly flat — a real problem on old timber floors and polished stone.

Visually, it frames the piece. A mounted sculpture reads as a considered object with a defined edge; an unmounted one reads as a figure standing in the room. Neither is better, but they suit different settings — a base works on a desk or mantelpiece, where the object needs its own territory.
