The machine

The counterweight is the whole design. A forklift carries a heavy cast block at the rear so the machine pivots on its front axle rather than tipping forward under load — which is why the back end looks so disproportionately solid and why driving one with the forks raised is a good way to fall over sideways.

Propane rather than diesel because these run indoors, where exhaust matters.
