The trade

A tow truck's boom is a lever, and the truck behind it is the counterweight. Recovery operators worked out early that the limiting factor was not the winch but whether the truck itself would stay put — which is why wreckers were built on the heaviest chassis available and why the rig sits as far forward over the rear axle as it does.
