The cab
Checker built the Marathon largely unchanged from 1961 to 1982 — same body, same shape, year after year — because a taxi company buying fifty cars a year cared about parts commonality and a roof high enough to sit up straight in, not about restyling.
Yellow was not an aesthetic choice either. John Hertz reportedly commissioned a study on which colour the eye picks out fastest at distance, and painted his fleet accordingly. Every city that copied him has been yellow ever since.
