Why coin banks look like things

Novelty banks became popular in America in the 1870s, when cast-iron manufacturers realised that a bank shaped like an animal or a vehicle taught children to save far more effectively than a plain box did. Some of the mechanical ones — where inserting a coin triggered a small performance — are now serious collectors' items.

The principle holds. A bank that does something gets used; a jar does not.
