The style

Faceted sculpture works on the same principle as 3D computer graphics: a curved surface is approximated by enough flat polygons that the eye fills in the rest. Reduce the count far enough and the object stops pretending to be smooth — which is the point, because the facets each catch light differently and the piece changes as you move past it.

It also solves the problem of animal heads on walls. A faceted lion is unmistakably decorative, with none of the taxidermy associations of a realistic one.
