The ship
Blue Ridge carries almost no weapons and an enormous amount of electronics. She is an amphibious command ship — a floating headquarters with the communications capacity to coordinate an entire fleet, its aircraft and its landing forces from one hull.
The distinctive flat, uncluttered upper decks are deliberate: the ship's antenna arrays need clear arcs, so the superstructure is kept low and the sides are left free of the gun mounts and boat davits that clutter a conventional warship.
Commissioned in 1970 and forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, she is the oldest deployable warship in the US Navy — second in service only to Constitution, which does not deploy.
