The design
More than sixty Type 209 boats have been built for over a dozen navies — Greece, Turkey, Argentina, Chile, Peru, India, South Korea, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa and others. No other post-war submarine has sold anywhere near as widely.
The reason is that Germany designed it specifically for export. Post-war treaty limits capped German submarine displacement, which forced HDW to build small — and a small, cheap, capable diesel-electric boat turned out to be exactly what medium-sized navies wanted. The design is also modular enough that different customers took different lengths and equipment fits.
A Type 209 fired the torpedoes in one of the few real submarine engagements of recent decades.
