The boat
Six Collins-class boats were built at Osborne in South Australia to an enlarged Swedish Kockums design. The programme was politically bruising — years of delays, cost overruns and public criticism over combat system problems and excessive noise.
What eventually emerged was one of the quietest conventional submarines in the world. In multinational exercises, Collins boats have repeatedly penetrated US carrier screens and achieved simulated kills on the carrier — something nuclear submarines struggle to do, because a diesel-electric boat running on batteries is quieter than any reactor plant can be.
