USS Zumwalt Destroyer (DDG-1000) is the lead ship of a new class of stealth guided-missile destroyers in the U.S. Navy. Named after Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, the ship was designed for multi-mission capabilities, including land attack and littoral warfare. Construction began in 2009 at Bath Iron Works, and Zumwalt was commissioned in 2016. With its futuristic, angular design and radar-absorbing materials, USS Zumwalt Destroyer (DDG-1000) has a reduced radar cross-section, making it harder to detect. It features advanced systems such as an integrated power system (IPS), dual-band radar, and originally included two Advanced Gun Systems (AGS) for long-range land strikes, though their ammunition was later canceled. Despite program cuts reducing the class to just three ships, USS Zumwalt Destroyer (DDG-1000) remains a key platform for testing next-generation naval technologies, including future hypersonic missile integration and advanced surface warfare systems.
