History
Belfast was commissioned in August 1939 and struck a magnetic mine three months later, breaking her back. She spent nearly three years under repair and came out longer, wider and better armed.
She led the cruiser force at the Battle of the North Cape in December 1943, holding contact with Scharnhorst through an Arctic night until HMS Duke of York could close and sink her. On D-Day she was among the first ships to open fire on the Normandy defences, and she supported the landings for five weeks.
After Korea she was saved from scrapping and opened as a museum ship in 1971. She has been moored opposite the Tower of London ever since.
