The ship
Yamato displaced nearly 73,000 tons and carried nine 46cm guns — the largest naval artillery ever mounted, each shell weighing 1.5 tons and each turret weighing more than a destroyer.
Japan built her in secret, knowing it could never match American shipbuilding numerically and betting on individual superiority instead. It was the wrong bet. She spent most of the war at anchor, too valuable to risk, while the carriers decided everything.
On 6 April 1945 she sailed for Okinawa with enough fuel for a one-way trip, under orders to beach herself and fight as a shore battery. American aircraft found her the next day. She was hit by roughly eleven torpedoes and six bombs, capsized and blew up. Of 3,332 aboard, 276 survived.
