History
Warspite earned fifteen battle honours across two world wars.
At Jutland in 1916 her steering jammed and she circled twice in front of the German fleet, taking fifteen heavy hits and surviving. At Narvik in 1940 she sailed up a Norwegian fjord and destroyed eight German destroyers. At Calabria the same year she hit the Italian battleship Giulio Cesare at around 26,000 yards — still the longest-range gunnery hit on a moving target by any ship, ever.
She bombarded the Normandy beaches in 1944 after being crippled by a German guided bomb at Salerno. Sold for scrap in 1947, she ran aground under tow off Cornwall and had to be broken up where she lay — which the fleet read as her refusing to go.
