History
Royal Oak was commissioned in 1916 and fought at Jutland. By 1939 she was slow and outdated, and was stationed at Scapa Flow — the anchorage considered the safest in Britain.
On the night of 14 October 1939, U-47 under Günther Prien threaded the blockships in Kirk Sound and entered the anchorage. She fired torpedoes, was ignored as an internal explosion, and fired again. Royal Oak capsized within fifteen minutes.
Eight hundred and thirty-five men died, more than a hundred of them boy seamen under eighteen. The Royal Navy has not recruited under-eighteens for sea service since.
The wreck is a designated war grave. Divers place a White Ensign on her hull each year, and oil still seeps from her tanks.
