HMS Royal Oak was a Revenge class Royal Navy battleship, launched in 1914 and commissioned in 1916. She took part in the Battle of Jutland during World War I and served in various capacities during the interwar years, including as a fleet flagship and training ship. At the outbreak of World War II, HMS Royal Oak was stationed at Scapa Flow, a key Royal Navy base in the Orkney Islands. On the night of October 13, 1939, the German U-boat U-47, commanded by Günther Prien, infiltrated the harbor's defenses and torpedoed the battleship while she was at anchor. HMS Royal Oak sank rapidly, taking 833 crew members with her. The attack shocked the British public and exposed vulnerabilities in Britain's home defenses early in the war. Today, the wreck lies in Scapa Flow as a designated war grave and a solemn reminder of the cost of war and surprise attack.
