History
Barham was commissioned in 1915 and fought at Jutland as flagship of the 5th Battle Squadron, taking six heavy hits. She was modernised between the wars and served in the Mediterranean, fighting at Cape Matapan in March 1941 where the Royal Navy destroyed three Italian cruisers in a night action.
On 25 November 1941, off the Egyptian coast, she was hit by three torpedoes from U-331. She rolled over and her magazines detonated four minutes later. Eight hundred and sixty-two men were lost.
A Royal Navy cameraman on a nearby ship filmed it. The Admiralty suppressed the news for two months to protect morale and give families private notification, and the footage was not released until after the war.
