History
Nagato was the first battleship in the world to carry 41cm guns, and for years she and her sister were the most powerful warships afloat. To the Japanese public she was the symbol of the navy — the ship schoolchildren could draw from memory.
On 2 December 1941, from her flag bridge, the signal Niitakayama nobore was transmitted to the fleet: the order to proceed with the attack on Pearl Harbor.
She was the only Japanese battleship still afloat at the surrender. The Americans took her to Bikini Atoll for the 1946 atomic tests. She survived the airburst, survived the underwater shot, and sank quietly five days later while nobody was watching.
