What an attack submarine does
An SSN carries no ballistic missiles and has no strategic role. Its jobs are hunting other submarines, sinking surface ships, launching cruise missiles at land targets, landing special forces, and gathering intelligence by sitting somewhere it is not supposed to be for weeks at a time.
That last one is the least discussed and, by most accounts, the most common. A submarine that nobody knows is there can watch a harbour, record the acoustic signature of every ship that leaves it, and go home without anyone learning it visited.
The boat
Commissioned 2010, built at Barrow, reactor fuelled for a 25-year life, and fitted with optronic masts rather than a traditional periscope.
