The X-rudder
Look at the stern. Instead of a conventional cross of vertical rudders and horizontal planes, the Type 212A uses four surfaces arranged in an X.
Every surface then contributes to both turning and depth-keeping, which gives finer control and more redundancy — lose one and the remaining three can still manage the boat. It also means no control surface projects below the keel, so the submarine can sit on the seabed or operate in very shallow water without damaging anything.
The trade is complexity: an X-rudder cannot be flown by hand and requires a computer to mix the control inputs.
