The Japanese Taigei-Class Submarine (SS-513 Series), also known as the 29SS class, is Japanese's latest generation of diesel-electric attack submarines. Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, it succeeds the Sōryū-class under Japanese's Mid-Term Defense Program. Designed to boost stealth, endurance, and combat performance, the first unit, JS Taigei (SS-513), was laid down in 2017 and commissioned in 2022. While similar in shape to the Sōryū-class, the Japanese Taigei-Class Submarine (SS-513 Series) features significant upgrades. It uses lithium-ion batteries for longer submerged operations and includes improved sonar, a modernized combat system, and advanced noise-reduction measures. With a displacement of around 3,000 tons and a crew of 70, it also offers better automation and living conditions. Its modular construction allows for easier future upgrades, ensuring the class remains adaptable to evolving technologies. These submarines play a vital role in Japanese's maritime defense, especially in deterring underwater threats and securing sea lanes. They are gradually replacing older Oyashio-class units, with several more expected to be commissioned by the late 2020s. As tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific region, the Japanese Taigei-Class Submarine (SS-513 Series) strengthens Japanese's undersea warfare capabilities and reflects its commitment to maintaining a cutting-edge, defensive-oriented naval force.
