Reading the hull
The raised section behind the fin is the missile compartment, and on a ballistic missile submarine it is the reason the boat exists. Everything forward is sensors and crew; everything aft is propulsion; the hump in the middle holds the launch tubes.
Arihant carries four large tubes — modest compared with the sixteen or twenty of American, Russian, British and French boats, which is why her successors are being built larger.
The programme
Commissioned in 2016 after roughly thirty years of development, Arihant gave India the sea-based leg of its nuclear triad. Only six countries operate submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
