Why submarines suit larger scale
A submarine hull is a smooth teardrop with very few features, so the ones that exist carry the whole model — the fin, the hydroplanes, the flood ports along the casing, the shape of the stern control surfaces. At 30 inches those read; at 36 they resolve.
It also means a submarine model is unusually easy to place. No masts, no rigging, no projecting bowsprit — just length, so a shelf that would never take a tall ship will take this.
The boat
Six Collins-class submarines were built in Adelaide to an enlarged Kockums design. After a difficult development they became among the quietest conventional boats afloat, with a record in exercises of getting past American carrier escorts undetected.
