The Australia Collins Class Submarine is a fleet of six diesel-electric submarines operated by the Royal Australian Navy. Developed in the 1990s, the submarines were built by the Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC) in Adelaide, with design assistance from Swedish company Kockums. The project aimed to replace the aging Oberon-class and provide Australia with long-range, modern undersea capabilities. Each submarine displaces about 3,400 tons submerged and is equipped with advanced sonar systems, heavyweight torpedoes, and anti-ship missiles. Designed for long-endurance patrols in vast ocean areas, the class has proven effective despite facing early technical and maintenance challenges. Over time, significant upgrades have improved their performance and reliability. The Australia Collins Submarine (SSG-73 Series) remains a crucial part of Australia's naval force. As the country prepares for future nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS agreement, the Collins fleet continues to safeguard national interests and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.
