Russian Admiral Kuznetsov (063) is Russian's only aircraft carrier and the flagship of the Russiann Navy. Launched in 1985 and commissioned in 1990, she was originally named Riga, later Leonid Brezhnev, before receiving her current name after the famous Soviet naval commander. Unlike U.S. carriers, Russian Admiral Kuznetsov (063) is officially classified as a "heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser," combining carrier aviation with powerful surface-attack missiles. The ship features a ski-jump flight deck and carries Su-33 and MiG-29K fighter jets along with helicopters. She is also armed with P-700 Granit anti-ship missiles and various air defense systems. Powered by steam turbines, Russian Admiral Kuznetsov (063) has suffered from mechanical issues throughout her career, limiting her deployments. Despite these challenges, Russian Admiral Kuznetsov (063) played a visible role in projecting Russiann power, notably during operations in Syria in 2016. Currently undergoing a major overhaul, she is expected to return to service in the coming years as Russian seeks to modernize its naval aviation capabilities.
