The class
Five Queen Elizabeths were built — Queen Elizabeth, Warspite, Barham, Valiant and Malaya — and they were the first fast battleships in the world. Oil firing gave them 24 knots, enough to operate with the battlecruiser force rather than plodding along with the battle line.
All five fought at Jutland in 1916 and all five served through the Second World War, by which time they were nearly thirty years old. The between-wars rebuilds were extensive: new machinery, new superstructures, aircraft catapults and greatly increased anti-aircraft armament.
Service
Flagship of the 5th Battle Squadron at Jutland, fought at Cape Matapan in 1941, and torpedoed by U-331 in November 1941 with the loss of 862 men.
