The Danish training ship that spent the Second World War teaching American cadets to sail — and changed the U.S. Coast Guard as a result.

Built plank on frame in western red cedar, rosewood and mahogany, with the white hull and full square rig of a purpose-built sail training vessel. Fully assembled.

Construction

  • Plank-on-frame hull with hand-applied white finish
  • Three masts, full-rigged, with complete hand-knotted standing and running rigging
  • Hand-stitched linen sails on every yard
  • Deck detail: boats, davits, deckhouses, wheel and rails
  • Metal anchors and wooden rudder
  • Solid wood base and engraved brass nameplate

History

Launched at Nakskov in 1933, Danmark was at sea when Germany invaded Denmark in April 1940 and put into an American port rather than return home. Her captain offered ship and crew to the United States. Over the next four years she trained roughly 5,000 U.S. Coast Guard cadets — an institution that had not previously used sail. The experience convinced the Coast Guard that square-rig training worked, and directly led to their acquisition of the Eagle in 1946. Danmark returned to Denmark after the war and still trains Danish cadets.
