About the type

Real pirates rarely built ships — they took them. A captured merchant sloop or brigantine would be cut down to lower her freeboard, have her deck strengthened for extra guns, and be rerigged for speed, because a pirate's whole business model depended on catching slower vessels and outrunning faster ones. Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge began as a French slaver; Bartholomew Roberts's Royal Fortune was a name he reused on four different captured hulls.
