The Norwegian Lion — a Danish-Norwegian ship of the line, painted, gilded, and crowned with the lion figurehead that gave her the name.
Built plank on frame in western red cedar, rosewood and mahogany. Fully assembled and ready to display.
Construction
- Plank-on-frame hull, hand-painted with gun-port banding
- Two gun decks with cast cannon and carved port surrounds
- Carved and gilded stern gallery, quarter galleries and lion beakhead figure
- Three masts and bowsprit with complete hand-knotted rigging
- Hand-stitched linen sails on every yard
- Ship's boats, capstan, wheel, anchors and rudder

History
Several ships named Norske Løve served the Dano-Norwegian navy from the 17th century onward — Denmark and Norway were a single realm until 1814, and the lion of Norway was one of its royal emblems. Ships of this class fought in the Great Northern War and the long contest with Sweden for control of the Baltic and the Sound, the narrow strait through which every ship entering the Baltic had to pass and pay toll.
