Construction

• Plank-on-frame hull with hand-applied white finish and the orange-and-blue racing stripe
• Three masts, barque-rigged, complete hand-knotted standing and running rigging

History

She was launched at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg in 1936 as Horst Wessel, a sail training ship for the German navy. Taken by the United States as war reparations in 1946, she was sailed across the Atlantic by a mixed American and German crew and commissioned into the Coast Guard. She has been the training ship of the Coast Guard Academy at New London ever since — nearly every American Coast Guard officer of the last seventy-five years has stood a watch on her.
