The ship
Launched at Woolwich in 1637 for Charles I with 102 guns, Sovereign of the Seas was the most heavily armed and most elaborately gilded warship of her age. The Ship Money raised to build her was levied without Parliament's consent and became a grievance that fed the English Civil War. The Dutch called her the Golden Devil.
