The subject
A hand-painted interpretation after Frederick Miller's study of Victory moored at Portsmouth — the ship at rest rather than in action, which is how almost everyone has actually seen her.
Victory was already a veteran when Nelson took her as his flagship. Launched in 1765, she led the British line at Trafalgar in October 1805 and carried Nelson's body home in a cask of brandy. She has been in commission since 1778 without a break and sits today in dry dock at Portsmouth, the oldest commissioned warship in the world.
