The battle

John Paul Jones fought HMS Serapis off Flamborough Head on 23 September 1779 in a ship that was falling apart under him. He lashed the two vessels together, fought for three hours by moonlight, and took the British frigate — then abandoned his own sinking ship and sailed home in the prize.
