The ship

Carpathia was the ship that answered Titanic's distress call on the night of 15 April 1912. Captain Rostron shut down heating throughout the vessel to send every available pound of steam to the engines and pushed her through an ice field faster than she was designed to go. He reached the position four hours later and took 705 survivors aboard.

Antonio Jacobsen, who painted the original, produced several thousand ship portraits from his home in Hoboken, New Jersey — most of them commissioned by the men who sailed them.
