Why the X-frame

Crossed legs form a triangle in both directions, and triangles do not rack. A rectangular frame relies on stiff joints to stop it leaning; an X-frame is rigid by geometry, which means it can be built lighter and more open without wobbling under a full load of bottles.

The form is old — Roman curule chairs used it, and so did medieval folding furniture, for exactly this reason.

Stocking it

The convention is bottles and glasses on top, everything else below. A cart that is visibly in use looks better than one styled to within an inch of its life.
