The aircraft
The Apache entered service in 1986 built around one requirement: survive being shot at. The airframe is designed to take 23mm rounds and keep flying, the crew sit in armoured seats behind a boron shield, and the landing gear is built to crush on impact and absorb a hard descent rather than transmit it to the spine.
The chin cannon is slaved to the gunner's helmet. Where the crew looks, the gun points — an idea that seemed exotic in the 1980s and is now standard.
