Why the wood

Early station wagons had genuine timber bodies because they began as commercial vehicles — depot hacks, built to carry passengers and luggage from railway stations, with bodywork made by carriage builders who worked in wood.

By the 1950s the wood was decorative rather than structural, and eventually not wood at all. The look survived because it had come to mean something: leisure, the outdoors, and somewhere to be on a Saturday morning.
