The era

Motorcycles of the early 1940s sat at an interesting point: rigid rear frames, girder or springer front forks, hand gear change and foot clutch. There was no rear suspension at all — the sprung saddle was the suspension, which is why saddles of the period sit on a visible coil.

Riders learned to stand on the pegs over rough ground, because the alternative was taking the impact through the spine. Telescopic forks and swingarm rear ends arrived after the war and changed motorcycling permanently.
